A Futurist's Take on Crypto
As physical and digital worlds merge, the crypto assets many dismissed as relics may find new relevance in an AI-driven, immersive future.
As the physical and digital world progress towards a place where one is indistinguishable from the other, we must analyze where we are in this process and how we can prepare for and capitalize on it. We’re heading toward a world where your avatar might spend more time negotiating lease agreements for your virtual condo than you spend negotiating your rent for your physical apartment. And in that world, something fascinating may happen: the crypto assets many people dismissed as relics and coins of hype cycles may find new relevance. Not because they suddenly solved world hunger or achieved quantum proof security, but because the future digital world begins rewriting the meaning of value itself.
The rise of spatial computing, virtual reality, augmented reality and full fidelity mixed reality will turn the internet from a place you visit into a place where you live. Layer on the continued improvement of blockchain, artificial intelligence, and immersive platforms, and we may yet watch the foundations of the metaverse finally solidify. Not a cartoonish over promised version, but a persistent digital layer where identity, ownership and agency actually matter. And when those three elements matter, blockchains, even the old, dusty, half forgotten ones, suddenly become culturally and economically relevant again.
AI generated worlds will need neutral, programmable assets. Immersive environments will need trustless authentication and payments. Autonomous AI agents will need an economic ecosystem. And legacy cryptocurrencies, built long before this convergence came into focus, may end up being perfectly positioned. They’re decentralized, widely distributed, and in many cases already supported by large ecosystems. AI agents may decide digital assets of old are precious and scarce, and the markets will take on new meaning.
As VR systems become more integrated with daily life, digital assets may begin behaving less like speculative tokens and more like the lifeblood of a new form of existence. When you’re transacting inside a fully immersive environment where avatars, autonomous agents, and user generated micro economies collide, the difference between ‘real’ money and ‘digital’ money becomes irrelevant. The economy of these spaces isn’t merely an overlay on the real world; it will become a parallel one, with its own rules, its own markets, and its own demand for scarce, verifiable, user controlled assets.
Even NFTs, once the poster children of speculative absurdity, may take on actual purpose in persistent virtual worlds where identity, ownership, and transferability matter more than ever. And traditional cryptocurrencies, some built long before AI agents were even a glimmer in a GPU’s eye, could find themselves used by these agents to negotiate, transact, and operate inside these new digital frontiers. What was once meme fuel becomes the monetary base layer for autonomous digital economies.
In this future, value is not merely stored; it is lived. Digital assets may become the connective tissue between human cognition, AI assistance, and immersive environments. And as funny as it sounds, your old wallet from 2018 might end up funding the neural enhanced, AI augmented version of you cruising through a hyperreal urban simulation on a Tuesday afternoon.
Our digital future will be a strange place, unimaginable worlds generated in the blink of an eye. The sensations of the physical world will be indistinguishable from the digital. The digital financial world that is developing today may well be the economic fuel of the digital world of tomorrow. The forgotten coins of the past may become the native currencies of digital worlds that do not exist yet. And if that’s not poetic justice for the early crypto believers, I don’t know what is.
